In the Costa Blanca North region of Spain on the Benissa Coast and a few metres off the winding coastal road between the towns of Calpe and Moraira lies the sandy cove of La Fustera just 900 metres from the apartment. It has a beach-side restaurant and a couple of bars. There are several smaller coves along this road such as Cala Baladrar which has a lovely beach bar. For the more energetic, walk along the cliff top nature trail from La Fustera to Calpe and drop down to the little harbour half way along for refreshment at its bar/restaurant.
The town of Calpe is full of history and culture, it has picturesque and pretty little streets and square with many bars, restaurants and museums. It is called The Artists Town and during June to September the Calle Jose Antonio and the Plaza de Espana will present a lively scene in the evening with not only artists and craftsmen putting up their stalls but there are also workshops and live entertainments as well as an art exhibition. Calpe has two large safe and sandy beaches divided by the 332 metre high Roch of Ifach. The Rock of Ifach (Penon de Ilfach) is a designated Natural Park home to numerous rare plants and over 300 species of animals and a nesting site for colonies of birds. One can walk to the very top and be rewarded with amazing views and, on a clear day, you can even see Ibiza. At the end of the first (easy) stage of the climb, there is a museum which documents the Natural Park.
La Fustera's neighbour is Moraira a village that has grown from a fishing village into a small town with a large Marina. The area around the Marina is filled with smart pavement bars and restuarants. Moraira has 4 beaches in all – the two largest are called Playa L’Ampolla and El Portet and are sandy and safe for swimming. The other two are smaller and partly rocky – ideal for snorkelling.
Slightly inland, the old quarter of Tuelada is worth a visit – see the Church of Santa Catalina, the Chapel of La Divina Pastora and the hermitage of San Vincente and the Wednesday market. The Jalon Valley is the vineyard of the Alicante region with bodegas where you can taste local wines and purchase supplies as well as get to tread the grapes at the right time of the year.
