6) Villages - There are several popular villages to see such as Poros, Skala, & Agia Efimia, that offer a variety of attractions and activities to do. One in particular is Sami which has been in the spotlight in recent years when the famous film “Captain Corelli’s mandolin” starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz was filmed here using Antisamos beach located near the village for some of the scenes that were filmed.
7) St Gerasimos monastery -Named after the patron saint of Kefalonia who was a monk. The church ordained him as a saint when his body remained intact. Many believe that his spirit has healing powers so the monastery is visited by thousands every year.
The Turks occupied Kefalonia in 1479 then 21 years later, the Venetians took over for 300 years influencing its culture, architecture and language. In 1953 a big earthquake hit the island resulting in great devastation with 90% of the buildings & homes been destroyed. One of the very few villages to survive the earthquake was Fiscardo where some of the original homes still stand today. The Venetian lighthouse that stands at the entrance to the little harbour of Fiscardo, dates back to the 6th century AD. One can take a scenic walk along a path leading up to this lighthouse with great views across the bay.
In 2006, a Roman graveyard was accidentally discovered by municipal workers excavating in the area. They found 5 burial sites together with gold jewellery, artefacts and copper coins dating back to Roman times between 146 B.C and 330 A.D. This discovery is very unique because nothing else like this has ever been found before on any other Ionian island. The natural beauty and tranquility of this island is what makes it so unique so it’s well worth a visit!!
