Description

Located close to Fiscardo, on the Greek Island of Kefalonia, Portokali Cottage is a romantic boutique cottage sleeping up to four people.
An original and authentic stone building, Portokali has been sympathetically renovated to retain its original charm, whilst still benefitting from modern comforts.
The cottage has a swimming pool, air conditioned bedrooms, television, wi-fi, dishwasher and washing machine.

Portokali Cottage is a quintessentially Greek rural house. It was built into the hillside over a hundred years ago as a traditional home providing a first floor for its owners and a ground floor (a katoi) for the owners’ animals. The building materials were obtained locally – locally quarried stone made the strong and characterful walls whilst Cypress trees were cut by hand from the forested valley below to provide the solid and abundant ceiling beams both downstairs and upstairs. The cottage has been sympathetically and tastefully renovated during the last 20 years; great care has been taken to retain the original features and character. Calm Mediterranean blues and greens alongside the original stone and cypress wood provide an aura of tranquillity. Throughout the house there are pieces of antique furniture which add charm and ensure that this is a home away from home rather than a holiday house.

The open plan ground floor is partly carved out of the rock foundation so remains comfortably cool in the summer whilst retaining warmth in the cooler months. The wooden ceiling provides a wonderful scent of pine. The ground floor consists of a comfortable sitting area, a dining area and a very well-equipped kitchen.

There is a sitting area with a sofa and television with satellite receiver.
There is also a dining area and a well equiped kitchen.
A spiral staircase leads to a spacious upstairs landing.

For many, one of the joys of a holiday in Greece, is the fact that it is easy and reasonable to eat out.

However, for those wishing to self cater, the well equipped kitchen is easy to work in. The equipment includes, a full sized cooker, fridge freezer, dishwasher, toaster and kettle.

Additionally, there are sufficient utensils, cutlery and crockery to prepare full family meals if required.

Upstairs is reached by a bespoke spiral staircase. Here the cypress ceilings are high which gives a light and spacious feel.

Two bedrooms and a bathroom are reached via the landing; both bedrooms are light and airy with two windows and high ceilings.

The double bedroom looks directly onto the stone pool terrace and towards Dafnoudi valley
The twin bedroom has an exterior door which opens onto a shaded terrace with views towards the Paliki peninsula.

Both bedrooms have air conditioning units which can also be used as heating in the cooler months.

Portokali paradise!

By Helen F. on 31-Jul-2019

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful, traditional property. As a family of four with two young children it was spacious and cool and the swimming pool was perfect for the hot weather. The property is very private and the valley and sea views spectacular. Would highly recommend.

A place to unwind

By Sean Goodall on 23-Aug-2019

We stayed here with our two children age 15 and 11. Relaxing and tranquil location. Pool and terrace area are fabulous for some quiet reading time and an afternoons doze. You could hear a pin drop first thing in the morning too. Very peaceful spot. Manganos is about a 15 minute walk up the hill and has two little supermarkets which were fine for us and four restaurants. Our favourite place to eat was at Alaties Beach Bar but we had to book 3-4 days in advance. Reginas boat hire in Fiskardo is a must do, a visit to Assos too. We managed to enjoy playing tennis at the stunning Emelisse Hotel for €20 per hour. Favourite beach for us was Emplissi which is about a 10 minute drive away. Get there for 1030 to pick your spot. All beaches we tried were clean with beautiful clear water and brilliant snorkelling. 30-35c and clear blue skies for two weeks. Lucky us. Thank you to Nick and Abi who were very helpful from start to finish. Would highly recommend. ☀️☀️

Beautiful Spring Visit

By Loula B. on 19-Mar-2022

We had a wonderful short visit to the island. The cottage is lovely with plenty of charm and stylish touches; we loved the peaceful valley setting. We explored the area and found some open tavernas in the nearby village which is a short walk away. Our visit was early season, so we were able to do some of the walking trails. Abi was very kind and helpful and recommended places to visit and walks to do.
