What to do in Whitby?

Whitby Abbey, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, inspired Bram Stoker to write his classic novel Dracula. You can explore the abbey’s ruins, visit the abbey museum, and enjoy the panoramic scenery from the 199 steps that lead up to it.
British explorer, navigator and cartographer, Captain James Cook, has close ties to Whitby and a house where he lived is now the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
Whitby Goth Weekend is a twice-yearly alternative music festival which is now one of world's premier Goth events. Whitby is home to many other music festivals including world music, country, folk and Northern Soul.
Split in two by the River Esk and the Whitby Swing Bridge, the east side has narrow cobbled streets with many shops making and selling local Whitby jet jewellery. The west side has many fish and chip shops, arcades and the famous long sandy beach.

Places to visit near Whitby

You can visit the pretty fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay just a few miles south of Whitby or head north to one many other seaside villages such as Sandsend. You can even walk from Sandsend to Robin Hood's Bay via the Cleveland Way National Trail.
Go back in time to a more sedate age by spending a day behind steam on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Trains start from Whitby station and take you on a leisurely journey along the Esk Valley and across the Moors to the attractive market town of Pickering.
