Description
As featured in House and Garden!Sleeping up to 12 guests, Sampsons is a beautiful 7 bedroom house set on a private Cumbrian Estate on the edge of the River Eden in this glorious unspoiled valley. With a huge open plan kitchen and family sized AGA, this much loved home is the perfect base from which to enjoy the very best of Cumbria and it's local produce.
Reached by a private lane, the only sound is the splash of trout in the river or the occasional steam train on the nearby Settle-Carlisle line. Ideal for family and friends, children can explore freely whilst you relax on the squishy sofas in the spacious living room by the huge open fire. There are much loved antiques, books galore and pale wooden floors with brightly covered kilims. Seagrass carpets lead up to the bedrooms which are all individual, full of light and have views across the surrounding fells. No fighting for the views as all the rooms have them! The gardens have extensive lawned areas for kicking a ball around. Private Fishing can be booked in advance at a daily rate via the Lazonby Estate. . There could be bats during July and early August which are a protected species and completely harmless.
Lazonby is a working Estate and there will be pheasant shoots during the winter.

Amazing House in a Great Location
By Paul Bennett on 03-Mar-2026Amazing house in a great location! We felt privileged to stay in this family retreat with home comforts and lots of space for our 3 generation group of 10. There is a lovely large sitting room and also a snug with toys for the children. We enjoyed the Nobel cooker and large kitchen/dining area. The location is beautiful - we watched trains from the bridge and all walked down to the River Eden in it's peaceful valley.

Beautiful outlook Tips for other travellers We visited Lowther castle, where the adventure playground was a big hit with the kids, and the grounds are pretty. Nice cafe there for lunch and extensive walks available in the estate and beyond. The castle, stately home really, is a ruin in the process of having some maintenance done. Some of our party enjoyed a visit to Brampton, which looked quite historic and interesting.
