If you want a real Canarian experience, yet with all the comforts of home, plus your own private hot tub, come and stay in our pretty rural authentic Canarian house on one level built from traditional stone dating approximately from 1890 on the outskirts of the lovely old town of San Miguel de Abona in south Tenerife, 560 metres above sea level. The house, which sleeps a maximum of 3 people, is comfortably furnished in a rustic style with character wooden beamed ceilings and cool whitewashed walls. Its spacious layout offers 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 single), newly renovated shower room, lounge/dining room with new 43" Smart TV and a separate fully equipped kitchen with a quirky cave like feel, all leading from a central hallway. The house has all the home comforts you need.
Outside, our guests enjoy their own enclosed private south facing garden which is on 3 levels. The top level has a table and 4 chairs with an umbrella plus a rustic style BBQ for alfresco dining and on the middle level are sun loungers and umbrella. This area is a real sun trap! On the lower level we have created a relaxing chillout area with seating, patio heater and a corner pergola incorporating a misting system, perfect for cooling off in hot weather. There is also a hot tub for our guests’ sole use which we're sure you'll especially enjoy at night under the stars with a glass of something chilled by your side! The garden offers pleasant views to the sea, surrounding countryside and mountains. Guests have their own separate entrance so are able to come and go as they please plus there's free parking directly outside the property.
Ideally suited to couples and is perfect for those seeking a relaxing holiday away from the tourist resorts as this is a quiet rural residential area. It's a great get-away-from-it-all honeymoon destination too. Relax on your sun lounger during the day and when the sun goes down, enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine in the chill out area before savouring a romantic BBQ in the garden or take a stroll up to the village to sample traditional Canarian cuisine or tapas in the local restaurants, cafés and bars. End your day with a relaxing dip in the hot tub under the stars ...
For homeworkers, there's fast free WiFi plus plenty of space to work in. For those who need it, there can be 2 separate workspaces (one in the lounge/dining room where we have created a specific work space in the corner plus one in the 2nd bedroom) with access to power sources and good natural lighting. Or set your laptop up in the garden, even better! Switch on the coffee machine and you're good to go ...
No sharing of common areas as our guests have the whole house and garden for themselves.
Things to do in the area
If you enjoy nature and walking/hiking and cycling Finquita Strelitzia is ideally situated as there are excellent walking trails and cycling routes nearby. San Miguel is a great area for walking/hiking as there are several walking trails which are easy to follow. There are in fact several historical points of interest in the area, including the La Hoya settlement, reached via an ancient royal road from just behind the property. A 1.5 hour walk takes you to the nearby viewpoint of Mirador La Centinela offering beautiful scenic views of the south of the island.
The town of San Miguel de Abona is very old. There is a beautifully restored museum, La Casa de El Capitán, which features artefacts from the age of the Guanches, the ancient inhabitants of Tenerife prior to the Spanish conquest. It also has a lovely church, the Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel. Next to it is the church square where fiestas take place at certain times of the year and dancing continues late into the night. Part of the fiestas include processions where locals dressed in traditional costume hand out free food and drinks from decorated floats, alongside small groups of musicians, singers and dancers. There are some lovely old properties too which makes it pleasant to take a wander through the streets.
San Miguel offers several nice restaurants, cafes and bars which are within walking distance and mainly offer Canarian cuisine and tapas, although there is a Venezuelan bar/cafe serving Venezuelan specialities and also an Italian restaurant. Tiramisú is a very popular cake shop where you can sit & enjoy coffee & a cake or pastry and watch the world go by. There are a couple of supermarkets in the village, plus a butcher, fruit & vegetable shop, bakery, banks, post office and a chemist.
On the coast 15 minutes drive away is the fishing village of Los Abrigos which has several restaurants in its bay overlooking the sea and there's even a fish market where you can buy your own fish and bring it back to cook on the BBQ. Further along the coast is El Médano, 25 minutes by car, fantastic for kite surfing and wind surfing. You can also climb nearby Montaña Roja (Red Rock) which juts out into the sea in less than an hour, it's a great spot for watching the planes come into Tenerife South airport!
We are also well placed for golfers, being only 15 minutes drive from the golfing haven of Amarilla Golf on the coast. For those wishing to venture further afield, Playa de Las Americas golf course and Costa Adeje Golf & the prestigious Abama Golf are also within easy reach by car.
A 25 minute drive brings you to Las Americas & Costa Adeje with all the tourist attractions including the world famous Siam Park water park with its own beach and wave pool and next door Siam Mall packed with shops and restaurants, a great day to spend a few hours if it's not sunbathing weather.
Just 20 minutes drive up into the mountains is the village of Vilaflor in which are several vineyards so wine tasting is also an option.
Those interested in astronomy can also participate in stargazing group trips which take place in the Teide National Park, speaking of which hosts Mount Teide, the third largest volcano in the world at an altitude of 3715 metres above sea level. There are several walking trails there and you can also take the cable car up to the summit.
THINGS TO NOTE
Please note that pets are not allowed due to the fact that we ourselves have cats - you may get a visit in the garden, especially if you're having a BBQ!
We allow a minimum of 24 hours between guests' departure and our next guests arriving, giving us plenty of time to thoroughly clean and sanitise the house. The hot tub is also regularly emptied, refilled and reheated. We also ventilate the house before and during cleaning and provide our guests with cleaning products, gloves, sanitiser gel etc.
Guest access
Guests have the complete house and garden for themselves. No communal spaces to share with other guests or the owners who live in the property next door.
Your hosts have lived at the property for the past 20 years. We bought a property in San Miguel as we liked the quaintness of the village and the fact that it was situated away from the tourist areas, yet still within easy reach of them as the TF-1 motorway is just 10 minutes away. We also loved the uniqueness and character of the property with its wooden ceilings, uneven whitewashed walls and general quirkiness! We feel very lucky to live in such a historic picturesque village and also to have several excellent restaurants within walking distance or 5 minutes drive which we're happy to recommend to our guests! As we live on site, we are available at all times to answer any questions or provide any assistance you may need. We speak English, some German, Spanish and a little French (improves with a drop of vino!) and very much look forward to welcoming you to Finquita Strelitzia and to San Miguel! We're dedicated to making your stay here memorable and if you have any special requests we'll do our utmost to fulfil them.
This isn't a modern villa, but a charming old character property built in 1890. A heater can be provided in cold weather or a fan in summer for a small fee. Although there are 2 bedrooms, we can only accommodate 3 people as there is only wardrobe space in the single room.
