SUMMER IN MORZINE
There are numerous places of interest to visit within close proximity:
Close to Morzine is the Gorge de la pont de diable, which is a beautiful waterfall and very deep gorge and is well worth a visit. Click to visit http://www.lepontdudiable.com/index.php?Langue=EN
Also nearby in Les Gets is a 18 hole Golf course and a lake which is reached by going up to the first ski level (either by car or cable car) and then a short walk to Lac du chavannes which has picnic tables and a large area of grass for picnicking and sunbathing.
Locally the pretty little village of Les Lindarets (which is closed in winter) but in summer has goats which wander around and can be fed.
Geneva in Switzerland is a very elegant city and can easily be visited for a day or half a day (approx 1 hour drive). Click to visit http://www.geneve-tourisme.ch
Around Lake Geneva (the largest natural lake in Western Europe) boasts the towns, Evian Les Bains about 30 min drive from Morzine, and is famous for its mineral water, the head of the spring where the water is bottled can be visited. There is a casino and a pedestrian shopping area. There are many well-maintained public parks. And there are many water sports on the lake itself including yachting, windsurfing, rowing, water skiing, and motorized water sports.
Thonon Les Bains is another spa town situated on Lake Geneva. The port of Thonon is very pretty and has many old houses and colorful gardens by the lake and the shopping area, this too is another attractive resort to visit. Click to visit http://www.thononlesbains.com
Yvoire is a beautiful walled medieval town on Lake Geneva with cobbled streets and lovely old buildings. There is a port and in the summer at the weekend there are many street performers around to entertain you. There are many shops and art galleries which you may find interesting. The towns on Lake Geneva all have a connecting water-bus to take you across the lake and on to Montreaux or Lausanne in Switzerland. You can also trip around the lake or go on a dinner cruise.
Lake Annecy and the beautiful lakeside town of Annecy are also well worth a visit. The lake is perfect for swimming and boasts many other water sports and is good for taking a cruise to enjoy the fantastic scenery. Annecy can also boast one of the largest firework displays in Europe at the Fete de Lac on the first Saturday in August. Click to visit http://www.lac-annecy.com
Chamonix (1 hour drive) With over 300kms of marked hiking trails is one of Europe’s most celebrated resorts dominated by the legendary snow-capped Mont Blanc which attracts more visitors during the summer than winter because there is the Alguille du Midi to visit (12,000ft) with its views from the Glacier out across the French, Italian and Swiss Alps. An absolute must! Click to visit http://www.chamonet.com
If you do not have transport then all of these towns can be reached by bus or on trips out organised through the tourist office in Morzine (250 yards from apartment).
Do not forget to visit the bureau de tourism to see if there are any special events occurring during your stay in Morzine, There is also a large Mountain bike scene with many international events, which can be fun to watch.
Morzine is a picturesque old style savoyard town with no high-rise buildings and an unspoilt town centre, and a way of life that has been passed down through generations. With a strong French charm with many bars, clubs, and a lively après ski scene
The town has many reasonably priced shops and restaurants, which cater for all tastes, from crepes to pizza, and of course traditional French. The supermarkets and specialist food shops stay open until late each evening and provide ready-made dishes, this makes self-catering very easy
Morzine can be reached by car from the French seaports then motorway round Geneva and a short drive to the village via Les Gets. If preferred it is also possible to fly to Geneva and hire a car to drive to Morzine (approximately 1 hour). Buses also run from Geneva Airport to Morzine or I can recommend a transfer company who runs transfers to and from Geneva to Morzine..
