Description
Tucked away yet in the centre of things, our charming character cottage is perfectly located for a holiday in West Bay. A period cottage with a contemporary interior, its neutral tones and cosy log burner combine to give a welcoming and relaxed feel all year round. Ideal for solo travellers, couples, smaller families and groups, sleeping 4 guests in two bedrooms.
The cottage is a short stroll from the harbour, beaches and golden cliffs as well as numerous restaurants, pubs and cafes. It's a fantastic base for exploring this beautiful part of Dorset.
The space:
Downstairs the cottage has an open plan living, dining and kitchen area.
In the living area there is comfortable seating for four. The bespoke kitchen includes a microwave, oven, hob and under counter fridge with a freezer compartment. The cupboards are stocked with ample cutlery and quality cookware although, with all the delicious food on offer within an easy walk, you might find you don’t want to cook much at all!
Entertainment is provided by a SMART TV (log into the streaming apps with your own account) and a DVD/Blu-ray player. A micro hifi system with CD and radio and bluetooth enables music streaming. Plus there’s a good selection of books, local OS maps and guides, games and DVDs. The cottage has a free fibre WiFi connection to the internet.
A rear lobby with hanging space for beach bags and sunhats – or coats and boots depending on what time of year you visit – leads through to the bathroom. It has a modern bathroom suite with a very effective shower over the bath.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms with original exposed wooden floorboards. The front bedroom has a double bed. The twin bedroom has a single bed and a custom built captain’s bed (2’6″ width). There’s books and toys to help keep younger children happy.
The cottage has small paved front and back gardens. There is a picnic table and parasol in the back garden (in summer) and a bench in the front.
There is loads more information about the cottage and the local area on our website.
Note on parking: The gravel area in front of the front garden is shared between our cottage and its two neighbours. You can always unload there and often park there although this is not guaranteed as some give-and-take is required if all three are occupied at the same time. Occasionally it may be easier for you to park nearby where there is plenty of public parking. Street parking is free right next to the cottages. Neighbourhood highlights:
Our cottage is just moments away from West Bay’s pretty fishing harbour. Two beautiful beaches are either side of the harbour.
In West Bay you’ll find several restaurants, cafés and pubs all a short stroll away. Locally caught seafood is often a speciality. Book a special meal at the award winning Station Kitchen, where you can dine in two converted railway carriage at the platform of the old station. There are also the famous 'kiosks' lining the harbourside which sell fresh fish and other take-out food. Lunch at Rachel’s is very good, as is the local ice cream from Baboo Gelato.
West Bay shops include a fishmongers, a fishing tackle shop, a small convenience store, bakery, art gallery and a vintage emporium.
Things To Do:
With the harbour, river, beaches and Lyme Bay, West Bay is the perfect spot for seaside and water-based activities. Both East and West Beach feature in the Beach Guide and West Beach is Marine Conservation Society recommended. West Beach has a lifeguard service during the summer holiday season. From the harbour you can go on a sightseeing boat cruise to take in views of the Jurassic Coast or go on a quick fun blast on a RIB boat. Families can try their hand at crabbing from the harbour walls. Sea anglers have the opportunity to fish from the piers and beaches or go out on fishing trips and charters. The sea is often calm enough to go out on a paddle board, giving you a great view of the cliffs. Alternatively you can take to the River Brit in a rowing boat or on a guided canoe trip through the riverside meadows.
Back on land you can enjoy countryside and coastal walks. Straight from your front door walk the South-West coast path. Go west and take the path to Eype. Walk a little further to have lunch right by the beach at The Anchor in SeaTown. Going the other way you head to Burton Bradstock. Have lunch there at the Hive Beach Café or the Seaside Boarding House.
West Bay is a great base from which to explore the towns and villages along this stretch of coast. The lively market town of Bridport is five minutes by car or 25-minutes on foot via an old railway line and past a brewery, providing everything you need for a relaxed self-catering holiday in Dorset. A thriving market runs every Wednesday and Saturday, and there is also a good variety of high street shops and independent retailers. The stylish art-deco cinema has a full programme of films and live entertainment, and the town also has a museum and lots of places to eat and drink. Further shops and amenities are available 10-miles away in the resort town of Lyme Regis, while Weymouth is around 35-minutes in the car.is only a five minute drive away a classic seaside town with a busy harbour and a huge blue flag sandy beach.
There are lots of tourist attractions close by including Abbotsbury Swannery, the sub-tropical gardens, Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park and much more.
We hope you come and spend a holiday in our cottage and enjoy staying in it, West Bay and beautiful West Dorset as much as we do!
