This property is in a secluded, but not isolated, valley 10-15 mins away from the facilities at Mirandol Bourgnounac. We have approximately 8 acres of land with a wealth of flora and fauna.
This area is not 'smart' France , but a region of small working farms and beautiful views, with a real charm of its own. The more sophisticated world is not far away, with UNESCO City of Albi renowned for the artist Toulouse Lautrec and for being the centre for the religious medieval Cathar wars. Castres is also a must visit with ancient buildings tumbling down to the river, museums, art galleries and modern bustling city centre.
We are surrounded by the picturesque, fortified Bastides of the region, such as Monestiés, Cordes sur Ciel and Najac which allow you to dip into the regions turbulent medieval heritage and architecture.

The sunny terrace is partially roofed for more shade and also a WC installed for 2024 season. Expect the swallows to pay a visit in summer!
Canoeing and river swimming are available at Laguepie with river swimming also at Lagarde Viaur .. St Antonin is a great place for river canoeing with full and half day canoe rental.
The Cap Decouverte is a vast sports/walking/live events area, with lots of activities for children and adults, water skiing, swimming, skateboard park, go carts etc 30 mins away and is best viewed through their web site https://www.capdecouverte.com. The beautiful Lake Roucarie, 15 mins, has a 7k round walk, supervised swimming with café and facilities. The French Federation Sailing club, USC voile, are based at the lake and rent pedaloes ,paddle boards; they also offer windsurfing and dinghy sailing lessons, which some of our guests have thoroughly enjoyed.
This region is famous for its lively summer fetes, where you may join the locals in a communal meal and dancing to live music, until late The markets and brocantes are also a great favourite, with locals and holidaymakers alike. The most popular market being at the lovely old bastide town of St Antonin Noble Val, which is a great day out. (St Antonin is often used for filming e.g. Charlotte Gray, Helen Mirren's 1000 steps etc) Our favourite fete is at St Andre, copious communal meal usually the 'plat principal' is a regional speciality Aligot and a huge steak .Always very popular and it is necessary to book in advance. The local fete at Montirat has usually 'Aligot Saucisse' for plat principal at its communal meal and is always fully booked.
July 6th sees the start of the annual music festival in Albi, Pause Guitar, with entertainments at various outdoor venues covering a wide range of musical offerings. Electric cycle hire with equipment, is at Monestiés 20 minutes away.

RESTAURANTS
This region is famous for the specialties of Aligot, Saucisse de Toulouse, cassoulet, foie gras canard and confit de canard. There are a wide range of good restaurants from local hostelries to more refined restaurants in the region. The "home cooked" foods at local restaurants, at midday represent good value for an inclusive menu There is more catering for vegetarian taste, these days as tourism has made it necessary to cater for everyone. The Châtaignerai,(15 mins) bar and open air restaurant, with a slightly Bohemian appeal. Jazz musicians offer a musical background most summer evenings. This is a great favourite for families with children. In the heat of a summer, the Châtaignerai offers a cooler refuge as it is situated alongside the river Viaur. Serving a menu including Crepes, ice-creams and buckwheat pancakes with a choice of excellent salads , local products and vegetarian meals etc. They do not take cards and booking is necessary in peak periods.
Mirandol has a recently opened restaurant which has had great reviews and occasionally has musical entertainment at weekends. There is also a local takeaway pizzeria. (10mins). the local village has all you need, Boulangerie, Boucherie, small well stocked supermarket, garage, bank post office etc.
La Fouillard also has a great bread and patisserie shop also a good Pizza/snacking restaurant/takeaway. Monestiés has an excellent 'al fresco' restaurant with large portions of excellent food, always in demand. More sophisticated eating is at Relais de St Andre de Najac, Hostel del Barry Najac ,Moulin de Varen or Albi. The recently opened Brewery at Cordes sur Ciel, has musical entertainments and various visiting food trucks, including English fish and chips occasionally, for themed nights. The brewery has several types of excellent real ale made on the premises, and is a laid back , outdoor informal place to have a great time with the local families, in relaxed ambiance

ABOUT US
We have lived in this area for many years and have renovated 2 farmhouse ruins, before this barn. We love the character and history of old buildings, combined with modern facilities. We try to incorporate as many of the old features and artifacts as practically possible.
This property is relatively new to the holiday market, being available for the first time in 2023, but we are "old Hands" and have many years experience of very successful holiday letting in this popular region.

Please note that the tariffs are all inclusive; includes towels, linen, local taxes and end of stay cleaning.. Mid stay cleaning is available at 20 euros per hour if required.

Top of the List

By Astill on 07-Sep-2024

24th August to 7th September 2024 We have really enjoyed the tranquillity of the barn which has been so peaceful for us. We have rented many properties in France over the years and this is now at the top of the list. The pool area and high standard of maintenance has been a joy. we have spent several days out on our bikes exploring the countryside and to come back and enjoy more sun and a swim to cool off has been delightful. We particularly like the different seating areas for different times of the day. Breakfast on the terrace, late afternoon on the west side getting the last of the sun and downstairs to finish off the evenings. The bats down there have been interesting to watch and we were pleased to free the trapped Hedgehog and get photos of it for you. The living space indoors is wonderful, bright and airy and the kitchen supplied us with everything we needed. We love how you have furnished the Barn with old items from the past, it makes it all so interesting. We have seen the deer, woodpecker and the mole hills progressing up the slope in front of the terrace.... We have so enjoyed the planting in the gardens, the butterflies have been abundant. Many thanks we have had a great time. C and J; Surrey, UK

perfect two weeks

By Emma Bond on 24-Aug-2024

10-25 August 2024 Perfect two weeks We have had the perfect two weeks at the beautiful Barn! The pool is crystal clear and perfect, and having the shaded area has meant we could completely relax reading a book when the sun got too hot! There are so many fantastic areas to relax, my favourite being on the decking first thing in the morning reading my book and watching the birds. The woodpecker always busy working away every morning in the tree by the gate. We have had beautiful sunshine most of the time, but when we did have rain my husband and daughter enjoyed the “HUGE” DVD library, my son chilled in the upstairs bedroom and I enjoyed the outside lounge which is perfect for when there is stormy weather. We have visited this area many times but have never been as relaxed and comfortable as we have here So much so, we ate in, most nights!! We will definitely stay again! Emma Dave and family Ps we also saw the deer and foxes!

incredibly relaxing holiday

By Catherine Easting on 10-Aug-2024

2-10 August 2024 This has been an incredibly relaxing holiday. The photos do not do this place justice. The Barn is immaculate and so tastefully done, filled with Christine’s art work The bedrooms downstairs are lovely and cool (and big!), the kitchen is airy and well equipped, there are so many places to sit and eat…. The pool is a God- send in this heat, spotlessly clean with a large area in which to take shade. John and Christine are the perfect hosts as everyone says, there when you need them but you wouldn’t even know they lived here, otherwise. We didn’t do too much, but we did go to Cordes (nice little town) and took the little train up the hill (walked back down). However, the star of the week was Najac; the most beautiful, non-touristy, medieval town. Try the chouquettes in Mason Delmur- to die for. All is pretty rural here but the drives to other towns are stunning, I would love to come here with friends. I could write much more but need to go.. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe this place. John and Christine have done an incredible job. Catherine and family Ealing, London

Appreciated the space

By Daphne Brooke Smith on 03-Aug-2024

21 July to 3 August 2024 We all appreciated ‘The Barn’ and in particular admired the space in all dimensions of the living space. Everything we needed was here- and more. The swimming pool received with maximum use with the few hot days. Thanks also for guidance such as ‘Chataingneraie’ which was a good start to swim and lunch with congenial service and your welcome and discretion. Thank you, Thank you... Enchanted

By Julian Birkett on 27-Jul-2024

20th – 27th July 2024 Like everyone else, we have been enchanted by this beautiful place. So wonderfully restored, just walking on the travertine tiles in our bedroom was a daily joy, as was breakfast on the kitchen terrace listening to a pair of Golden Orioles and in the evening watching the swallows tear up and down in front of us. There are so many things here to enjoy and the multiplicity of places to sit and chat or read or drink or snooze, the splendid kitchen table to lay at with spectacular local produce. Predictably enough we spent most of our time here, but we fitted in Cordes (lovely), Albi (spectacular cathedral of course but otherwise a bit dominated by chain shops; we went on Wednesday for the market but only found a covered shopping centre). St Antonin-Noble-Val (really special – swam a bit, but the river was quite hard to access) Laguepie (lovely swimming). But the star of the show was The Barn – did I mention the lovely garden? You were most welcoming John and Christine -thank you. Julian Charlotte, Claire, Beth and Jeremy London and Bordeaux

THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED

By KENT on 08-Jul-2024

We can thoroughly recommend the gite and this area of France. It is our first time in this area and we will definitely return. The gite is quiet and feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, but is 30/40 minutes very easy driving you have lots of really interesting places to go... Albi-a UNESCO site Najac - a magical place with no one there Cordes sur Ciel -can recommend nougat at the chocolate shop, expensive but with a black coffee, mmmmmm! Laguepie - very quaint St Antonin Noble Val - worth the trip Monestiés - great bakery and meals with locals at the Auberge buzzing Cap Decouverte - had a great time doing the activities there. The ski chair down was an experience. Even on Sunday it was eerily quiet!!Take drinks and a picnic, as even in high season not a lot to offer. There is a mini bus to the lake if you dont fancy the ski chair. We have had mixed weather14-30 degrees but there has been plenty to do with either site seeing or lazing by the pool. John and Christine have been excellent hosts, there when you need them but invisible the rest of the time. The gite has every home comfort you need and plenty of room I just wished we'd stayed for longer. great nature watching too. Thanks jo Ed lucy Alice Sheffield
