Stiffkey (meaning wood circle) is a very picturesque unspoilt village with many 17th century and earlier buildings. The chalk stream River Stiffkey winds its way through the village and exits onto the marsh at a place called The Freshes or sluices. Within easy walk from the cottage along the edge of the marsh, The Greens, where once sheep were grazed.
Stiffkey has been home to several important characters including Sir Nathaniel Bacon 1547-1622, who built the Old Hall. Arthur Ransome (author of Swallows and Amazons). Harold Davidson 1875-1937 Rector of Stiffkey, (killed by Freddie the lion). Lord Buxton 1918-2009 ( founder of WWF, Anglia TV, inter alia)
It has a 17th Cent. very characterful freehold family owned pub selling a range of beers. It is family & dog friendly and open all day.
There is a village post office cum cafe selling knick knacks. You can sit in a hut having coffee and cake.
There are many lovely walks in the area.
The owner will consider 5 day and weekend bookings out of season for small groups or couples.
