Overview
Description
Bread Oven Cottage provides the ideal base in which to relax and unwind. This B listed historic cottage provides comfortable and welcoming accommodation throughout the year. The cottage has been fully renovated and is furnished with contemporary furniture complementing the ancient fabric and character of the building.
Facilities include an open plan lounge with a wood burning stove, a well equipped kitchen, dining area and two unique bedrooms.
The master bedroom can be configured either with a Superking double or Twin beds and has a large ensuite shower room with toilet and washbasin. The smaller downstairs bedroom features the original Bread Oven and fireplace as well as a Kingsize double bed with adjacent private shower room with toilet and washbasin.
Full wi-fi controlled and zoned central heating, LED lighting and low energy appliances throughout ensure the cottage is as eco friendly as we can make it whilst retaining its historical character and charm.
The pretty enclosed garden has a sunny central seating area close to the old stone well once used to supply the property and its generations of past residents. There is parking for up to two guest cars within the garden gates.
Our website includes information on special offers and a link to our comprehensive online guest information folder which you can download or view online. It also features more pictures of the accommodation, many guest reviews and some suggestions from the long list of things to do and places to see in and around the cottage.
Located in the small village of Smailholm and nestled in the Scottish Borders midway between the market town of Kelso and ancient Melrose, Bread Oven Cottage is ideally placed as a base for many activities.
The Borders are famous for historical abbeys, ancient castles, magnificent country estates, walking, cycling, fishing and shooting, not to mention the glorious scenery and coast. History and rolling scenery abound and yet the cottage is also less than an hour away from Edinburgh and about two hours from Glasgow. The Borders Railway is just 6miles away in Tweedbank with trains every 30minutes or so into Waverly Station at the centre of Edinburgh between the sights and sounds of the new and the old towns.
Unfortunately due the entry step down and internal staircase the cottage is not suitable for wheelchairs. Please also be aware that the floors are not all flat due to the age and character of the building.
Short Term Let licence SB-00324-F, 4 Guests, EPC rating C.

By Karen on 17-Nov-2024We can’t recommend a stay at Bread Oven Cottage highly enough! Andy and Sue are great hosts - very friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. The accommodation is superb - spotless, spacious, well - equipped and beautifully furnished - and the welcome ‘ goodies’ are second to none! The location and surrounding area is wonderful for a variety of outdoor activities and for having so many interesting places to visit. Bread Oven Cottage is certainly one of the very best properties we have had the pleasure of staying in!

Beautiful and peaceful cottage.
By Mick and Anne McKinnell on 19-Oct-2024Very high standard of both accommodation and facilities. Much better than expected. I guess the clue is in the name, but the home made bread left for us was a real treat. Cannot recommend this place too highly.

By Guest from Scarborough on 25-Aug-2024Andy and Sue are excellent hosts, and are always on hand should you need anything. They keep the cottage spotlessly clean and in tip top condition. There is nothing you could want for while staying in this cottage. The welcome pack contains everything you will need on your arrival without having to dash off to the supermarket, and Sue's homemade bread and shortbreads are to die for! Most recommended.

By Jerry Kwestro on 23-Aug-2024This fabulous cottage has the WOW factor! What a cool cottage, which is gorgeous to look at on the outside and also very nicely decorated on the inside. Everything you could wish for during your holiday is there. Luxurious furniture, lots of space, loving atmosphere, beautiful views, great internet connection, very comfortable beds, not to mention the showers, they are a treat. And the surroundings are beautiful; there is much to see and do in the nearby area. A must go for anyone who really wants to enjoy a relaxing holiday!
