Description

The Owlery is a most romantic retreat set in the higher valley of Dittiscombe Estate.

It nestles amidst the conservation area of Dittiscombe, and is just two miles from the historic village of Slapton and the beautiful beaches of Start Bay. It's ideal for celebrations and to explore the South Hams area, most of which is within the South Devon National Landscapes. Guests can relax in the tranquility surrounding the cottage and enjoy the log burning stove, extra-large spa bath with room for two and king-size bed.

There is a private garden and the use of the extensive grounds where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the woodland and around the meadows and orchard, with wildlife to spot along the way.

Further afield there is easy access to the big sweep of beaches at Start Bay, and super walking on the South West Coastal Path between Dartmouth and Salcombe. Slapton village is a 10 minute drive away with two good pubs serving local food and drink, and the National Nature Reserve of Slapton Ley. From Dittiscombe guests can take the 50 minute walk to Slapton village, and join up with the South West Coast Path on to Torcross and Beesands.

The accommodation comprises:

Open-plan living area with space to cook, dine and relax in front of the log burner:
Comfy sofa and coffee table, circular glass dining table with chairs
Wifi and TV with streaming, shelves with books
Kitchen area well equipped with electric oven/hob (extractor over), fridge and microwave provide everything needed for a self-catering break.
Kingsize bed, wardrobe and dressing table, set on a galleried mezzanine floor a few steps up from the ground floor, with window looking out over the orchard.
The bathroom is down a short flight of stairs from the ground floor, with fabulous spa bath big enough for two, a separate shower cubicle, WC, wash basin, and heated towel rail.
Oil-fired central heating throughout.

Outside:

The cottage has a pretty garden where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or alfresco meal (outdoor furniture provided) whilst looking over the small pond.
There is a private lawned area with views over the valley.

The Owlery has its own parking space in front of the cottage.

Additional information:

Short breaks are available outside the school holidays or at short notice if the cottage is free.
The bed is made up ready for arrival.
Unfortunately this cottage does not accept pets and is not recommended for children other than small babies, but there are other dog-friendly cottages at Dittiscombe. Please go to the website to find out more.

Take a lovely canoe trip around the waterways of the area with a recommended local company Singing Paddles who provide guided tours in two-man canoes or a Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga with Simply Soulful Yoga.
Bike storage is available.

Wish we could have stayed longer

By Welling on 03-Jul-2024

Wish we could have stayed longer. Stayed in the Owlery it is a well thought out property with everything you need for comfortable stay, so comfortable that one day we did not venture out. The owners are very friendly as are the dogs, what they have done to create an environmentally friendly estate over 20 years or so is a brilliant example of how to encourage rewilding. Wish we had found it years ago.

Absolutely charming little cottage that is The Owlery . If you are looking for peace and tranquility this is the place to visit . There are beautiful surrounding walks together with a short car ride to Slapton and Tor cross for a walk by the sea before breakfast at one of the local cafes . Very charming . I shall definitely stay again .
