Description

We look forward to welcoming you to 'Les Hirondelles', our privately owned gite/holiday home. Our stunningly converted detached barn offers 5 beautiful bedrooms, two of which are en-suite and situated in what must be one of the most stunning locations in the Charente with far reaching views over the countryside from every room and the stunning open sided covered patio. There are beautiful walks from the doorstep, a large garden leading off into the countryside, plenty of parking and private pool.

We are situated in the south east Charente region of France very close to the border of the Dordogne and are surrounded by rolling hills and woodland, maize and sunflower fields but only 2km from the pretty town of Montmoreau St Cybard, with all amenities including butchers, bakers, bank, post office, bar and a little restaurant and a large supermarket. The stunning town of Aubeterre sur Dronne is only 15 minutes away with its unusual Romanesque monolithic underground church and voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has a variety of great restaurants, a wonderful river to swim in or you can sit with a chilled glass of wine or cold beer in the square watching the world go by.

The area has a wealth of charm and tranquility, from the South Charente with its echoes (but fewer tourists) of the next door Dordogne to the gently sloping vineyards of the wealthy Cognac producing West Charente. Spend your time visiting the many wonderful local markets including Aubeterre, Brantome, Riberac, Chalais and Villebois Lavalette with its feudal chateau dominating the region from its hilltop. Villebois has a market every Saturday morning where you can enjoy a dish of fresh oysters with a bottle of Muscadet under the ancient and covered market square. The attractive hill town of Angouleme is 30 minutes away, best know for its stunning Romanesque cathedral, international comic festival and the Cirque de Ramparts held each year. Spend a day tasting the wonders of the great houses of Cognac and learn about the history and production of this glorious amber nectar. The stunning town of Brantome is just under an hour away where you can wander the cobbled streets, take a canoe around the island town or sit in the park with its huge trees and stunning plant life. These are but a few tasters of what our area has to offer, and if it all proves too much, take time out to relax by the pool with a good book and a chilled glass of wine taking in the breathtaking views around you, not to mention the utter peace and tranquility this gite offers.

For more information for what to do in the area please check out our 'Activities' and 'Activities for Children' pages.

Les Hirondelles is a large and beautifully renovated barn, which includes all modern facilities, yet still retains the character features of huge oak beams, Charentais stone walls and is set on a hillside with the most stunning views. It has its own large garden, with established fruit trees and has a fantastic open sided covered hanger as a patio, meaning you can sit out in the fresh air come rain or shine looking out far across the sunflower fields, woodlands and hills. The 10 x 5 m pool is totally private to the property and surrounded by a beautiful decking patio with sun beds and again those views!

Amazing!!

By Karin Sehmer on 26-Jul-2024

Our stay in Les Hirondelles was superb. We were a party of 11 and there was more than enough room for us all. The owners were really helpful both before and during our stay. There was a large, much appreciated swimming pool, a dishwasher better than mine at home, a washing machine and a large and modern fridge We had all our meals outside on a shady patio and we used the barbecue a couple of times. The owners had left us a simple, but much appreciated food parcel for our arrival. Food shopping was easy in the nearby village with a large and comprehensive supermarket. Further afield, there was a beach by a river for the children with sand, good for simple digging but too dry for sand castles, There was also a children's playground at the river, toilet facilities and ice creams

We loved our stay in June 2024. Travelled with another family and two couples - the house is full of charm and character and swallowed us up aplomb. The location was gorgeous, surrounded as it is with verdant French countryside. Great towns to visit nearby. Owners could not be faulted. Such fun!

10 days in the beautiful 'Les Hirondelles' near Montmoreau, Charente

By Rhodri Dixon on 27-May-2024

As a family of 5 with 3 young children, we headed further North into the Charente department rather than our usual Lot et Garonne trip, finding this stunningly converted, capacious barn with pool, at the end of a sleepy farmers track, overlooking meadows with deer roaming freely, a wonderful haven of tranquillity. The friendly owners, Lesley and Toby, were on hand if needed with a wealth of local knowledge reflected in the welcome pack and hamper on arrival, very much appreciated! The gite/villa is huge and sympathetically renovated to the highest of standards with the most useful of covered overhangs should the weather play up, boules on the gravelled surface here was a regular thing. Flawless really, Montmoreau, Montboyer and Chalais offer all of the amenities locally with the beauty of Cognac and Angouleme within easy reach, even the majestic Bordeaux is only an hour away! Everything exactly as described although the pictures do not really do it justice, it simply is a tremendous place for a large family break with nature abounding, tons of space and a sizeable pool for family fun, all within the beautiful Charente area of South West France! Many thanks again to Lesley and Toby for creating this haven and sharing it with us!!

This is a real find.

By Andy R on 03-Jul-2023

This is a real find. A great converted farm building down a quiet farm track outside a lovely French market town. What could be better! We were a group of six, including three children, although the property can accommodate 12. We therefore had oodles of space, both inside and out. The property is just so lovely, very clean and with all modern conveniences. The views across unspoilt countryside were breath-taking, and we all spent long evenings just looking out. Our hosts, Lesley and Toby were on hand, when needed, to offer advice on the local area. They couldn't have been more helpful. The local town has all necessary shops, including a good supermarket; but do try the local bakeries - just great. The pool was also great, and the kids just loved it. All very safe and with great views. All in all a great stay and one which we are looking forward to returning to. Thanks Lesley and Toby for a very relaxing holiday.

We really enjoyed our stay in les hirondelles. We are a family of 8 adults and everyone was very positive about the house and the pool. But the most amazing thing is the view you have from the pool. We also liked the barn. A lot of space and well decorated. The owners are very Lucky to have a place like this.
