A Little Bit About Port Eynon, Swansea

The village of Port Eynon is minutes from the beach. The quaint village of Port Eynon sits snug in The Gower Peninsula which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), proudly the first place to be given this title in the UK. The local pub, restaurant, two fish and chip shops, Surf shop with Cafe and the beach are all close together. EE, ThreeMobile and Virgin mobile networks work in Port Eynon village and there is a pay phone by the roundabout, next to the shops on the sea front.
There are two nature reserves in Port Eynon; Port Eynon Point and Sedgers Bank which lies to the West of The Salthouse and is mainly beneath the high tide mark.
Port Eynon is thought to be named after an eleventh century Welsh prince, Eynon who built Port Eynon Castle that has gradually eroded by mother nature over the years. Port Eynon is the most southerly point on Gower. There used to be a bustling trade in oyster fishing, limestone quarrying, lobstering and crabbing – remains of the Oyster pools and the old harbour wall can be seen at low tide. The 18th century ruin of the old Salt House can be seen at the far end of the bay, it is thought that the business was run as a cover for smuggled goods!
Also situated in Port Eynon is Culver Hole – an unusual cave between two rock faces with a masonry wall. There is a staircase inside that leads up four floors, legend links it to the castle. There are also remains of The Salthouse, historically used to extract salt from the seawater. To the West of The Salthouse are two nature reserves; Port Eynon Point and Sedgers Bank.
