Featured in House and Garden January 2025 Edition!"To call Sampson’s Cave majestic is an understatement. The house itself is so homely it made us dream of a different life. We had some of the best days of our lives here” January 2024 Air BnB".
Sleeping up to 13 guests, Sampson's is a beautiful 7 bedroom house set on a private Cumbrian Estate on the edge of the River Eden in this glorious unspoiled valley. With a huge open plan kitchen and family sized AGA, this much loved home is the perfect base from which to enjoy the very best of Cumbria and it's local produce.
Reached by a private lane, the only sound is the splash of trout in the river or the occasional steam train on the nearby Settle-Carlisle line. Ideal for family and friends, children can explore freely whilst you relax on the squishy sofas in the spacious living room by the huge open fire. There are much loved antiques, books galore and pale wooden floors with brightly covered kilims. Seagrass carpets lead up to the bedrooms which are all individual, full of light and have views across the surrounding fells. No fighting for the views as all the rooms have them! The gardens have extensive lawned areas for kicking a ball around. Private Fishing can be booked in advance at a daily rate via the Lazonby Estate. . There are bats during July and early August which are completely harmless....
Lazonby is a working Estate and there will be pheasant shoots during the winter.

Leave ReviewA Magical Experience
By Hilary Boardman on 30-Dec-2024As you drive down into the valley and see the house for the first time you realise this is a rather special place. Surrounded by meadows, woods and a short walk to the river, all around is space and nature. The house nestles perfectly into the valley and is so welcoming with so many things to delight. We spent Christmas here and it was a magical experience. Thank you to Lorraine for making so comfortable and enjoyable.
Immaculate, Fascinating and Warm
By Janet Thumin on 04-Jul-2024We were seriously delayed by M-way traffic on our journeys from London and Bristol, and anxious about our Sainsbury’s order which was due at 5.30. Lorraine came up trumps and was at the house from 5.30: in the event we all arrived at about the same time - 6.30 - S’burys, Londoners and Bristolians! We found the house immaculate, fascinating and warm.

Utterly exceeded our expectations
By Clare Cordell on 29-Apr-2024Our stay at Sampsons completely and utterly exceeded our expectations. I am VERY particular about where I stay and I have to say, our week here was one of my favourite holidays! The property is absolutely stunning and we felt right at home as soon as we stepped through the front door. For such a big house it always felt warm, cosy and welcoming and it was such a delight to return to after a walk out in the local countryside. Tamar and Lorraine were both super friendly, responsive & helpful and the welcome pack had all the information you could need - they've truly thought of everything.
Lovely Quirky House
By Rodney Owen-Jones on 20-Mar-2024Lovely quirky house. Great for a family get together. Very child and dog friendly. Booking and communication prior to our stay was very good. A good time was had by all! Will definitely return!
