About Newlyn - A traditional working village of great character. Newlyn hosts several good pubs and eating places, one of which is the 'Tolcarne Inn' which is a real ale house offering excellent food. There is also a Cornish meadery (old style eating) and a variety of other restaurants all at walking distance.

Penzance is just a 10 min level walk along the promenade and you can walk to Mousehole along the coastal path in around 20 mins, or to St. Michael's Mount and Marazion to the east.

For those interested in culture, Newlyn boasts 3 art galleries whilst St. Ives and the Tate is a short drive away.
Lands End, Sennen and Porthcurno which is home to the famous' Minack theatre' (stunning open air amphitheatre set in the rocks) is 10 miles to the west. There are a host of interesting walks and beautiful sandy beaches all nearby.

Newlyn is an all seasons location, famous for the Newlyn/ Mousehole Christmas lights and festivities. It is on the scenic cycle route, has a regular bus service, a taxi rank and is approx. 1 mile from Penzance train station (in fact a car may not be necessary).

My partner and I have stayed at Hen Joppa since 2004 and return frequently. We hope to make it a tenth stay this year. Why do we keep coming back? Because Hen Joppa is simply a magical, luxurious place to stay in Newlyn. It's the only cottage on the sea wall in the whole of Mounts Bay with a spectacular view of St Michaels mount. It's one of the very few places we have stayed on holiday that has been a real pleasure to stay in. It's clean, extremely comfortable, quiet and very well situated to amenities, transport, pub next door etc. But one cannot fail to mention the views from the terrace- spectacular, one's whole holiday could be spent there! Sylvia, the housekeeper and her husband live directly across the road from the cottage and are on hand for advice and any enquiries are swiftly dealt with. The owners have made continued improvements to the cottage over the years making each stay even more pleasurable and comfortable. Hen Joppa and it's locality is a rare, extremely special and unique jewel. Consequently, it is excellent value for money and the reason we keep coming back for more......

Just wanted to thank you for allowing us to stay in Hen Joppa and what a wonderful property you have. To say that it is a hidden gem is an understatement, and we're just sorry we couldn't have stayed longer. Very best wishes

just wanted to get in touch to say thank-you for the fabulous stay at your house from August 16th -30th 2014. Your house is wonderful - it is indeed a very special place. Such a comfortable base in the heart of the community with Alf and Sylvia being such a lovely couple to have to answer questions and help to make our stay special. Alf was kind enough to lend us his Lands End Pass one day - really kind. We brought 3 teenagers with us and the space and independence the bedrooms with tv gave us was ideal. However it was a bit of a race to see who sat on the balcony- or should have the comfy settee upstairs in the evening! The balcony was so special - if I have one photo of a fishing boat moving "Through the Gap" into the harbour I have a hundred! As we visited during a spring tide my son had the honour of catching mackerel from the balcony and then grilling them for tea 3 minutes out of the water! The Newlyn Fish Festival was really special. I have wanted to visit it for years but have always been back home before the Bank Holiday. This time the day started really wet but I was ready- hoofing everyone out of bed to get onto the quayside and support the Seaman's mission. By 11 o'clock the sun was out - we'd bought some fish to grill so could pop it home really easily and go back to enjoy the fun. The kitchen was brilliant- loads of equipment. Had a day baking with the girls when it drizzled and could still nose up the street to see if the blue sky was coming over from St Ives! We have an old friend that lives near Godolphin, she lost her husband last year. We picked her up and had a day shopping with her and then she came over to the fish shops to stock up. We had lunch in, fresh out of Trelawny's and then all she wanted to do was sit on the balcony and enjoy the view- it was so lovely for us all. Certainly made me want to give up the rat race and get down to Cornwall! Anyway, I'm sure you get lots of repeat bookings but I just wanted to say a very big thank -you for this year and that I really hope we'll visit again- a very special house, thank-you so much.
