Overview
Description
A former isolation hospital, which has also been a rope mill and a dairy. It's a great place for a gathering with friends or family - ideal for birthday and anniversary celebrations... Within an easy walk of Masham (15-20 mins across fields), and with lots of outdoor space and the nature reserve literally on the doorstep. The house is spacious and well equipped. It has been a major renovation project and has retained its quirks and character as well as gaining some warmth and comfort! We're not 100% there yet, and are delighted to be using funds from our guests to keep going with improvements, so thank you for helping us get there! Guests so far have been very complimentary but please don't expect perfection!!
Guests enjoy the large kitchen, with old range cooker (sadly not working yet, but adds to the ambience). We're big cooking fans, so the kitchen is well equipped with most mod cons (big cooker, big fridge and freezer, wine fridge, KitchenAid mixer, bread maker, etc etc - let us know if you've got a specific cooking requirement in mind)
There are five bedrooms, four of which are ensuite:
1. Big room, king size bed, en suite bathroom with bath and shower (can add single z bed here if needed)
2. Double bed with a single high bunk. Morroccan/Bohemian style decor. This room is not ensuite. Again, room for further z bed in here if required.
3. Double room. With ensuite shower room. Room for travel cot if required, but not for additional single.
4. 'Harry Potter' room (see pics). Zip and link beds which can be king size or twin (please let us know which you'd prefer. You can sleep up to three in this room at a push.... Ensuite bathroom (bath with shower over) (Note picture of bed not up to date in this room)
5. Double, with pallet-wood feature wall. Ensuite bathroom (bath with shower over)
The house is set in a garden of 1/3 of an acre.
We are right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and within easy reach of the Yorkshire Moors. Pubs, restaurants, and two breweries (Theakston and Black Sheep) are available in Masham itself.
Hot tub can be hired in (via 'Bedale Bubbles') for an additional charge (usually around £250).

Leave ReviewBirthday Celebration
By Jodie on 12-Aug-2024Stayed for a weekend in August 2024 for a birthday celebration. Mixed ages from 9m to 70 plus one cocker spaniel. We all had a fantastic time, especially the spaniel! The house and gardens are beautiful and we went for a walk each evening around the wetlands. House is superbly stocked with top quality items ie pots and pans, massive fridge freezer, surround sound, games etc. We have stayed in many AirBnbs as a family but all agreed this was one of the best. We would love to stay again someday. Carolyn and Steve were excellent hosts, always on hand to help with any questions and even allowed a much earlier check in which was appreciated. If this place is available, book it!
'Better than the photos'
By Rebecca on 25-Jul-2024Carolyn and Steve's place was just superb. We stayed as a group of 12 and unanimously agreed that it's better than the photos and was just brilliant. We had such a wonderful weekend. Private, amazing setting, absolutely stunning house, unbelievably well equipped, spotlessly clean. Well situated at a short hop into Masham. Also part of a wonderful nature reserve which we enjoyed walking/running round. And Carolyn was just fabulous. So responsive and helpful. She sent us loads of great suggestions and helped us with even tiny queries. We just can't sing this places praises enough.
Friends get together
By Gail on 13-Jul-2024This is a fantastic place to stay for a large group of friends or family, especially as 4 out of 5 bedrooms are en suite. The downstairs is perfect for hosting large groups, especially the large kitchen diner.... Which has everything you could possibly wish for. We were there to celebrate two friends big birthdays and whilst the weather may not have been on our side the house exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend this gorgeous property and hope to be back in the future. Thank you from the Dine Around the Close gang.
Review from Jonathan, November 2023
By Jonathan on 25-Nov-2023We had a magical time at the Old Fever Hospital. The house, garden and neighboring wetland nature reserve were just perfect for our group and children. We had such a relaxing time. On evenings, we particularly enjoyed the record player available. The children absolutely loved the Harry Potter room, and its secret passageway! It was just fantastic. We can’t wait to go back! Thank you Carolyn and Steve!
Review from Oct 23
By Denise on 08-Oct-2023There is something very special about being entrusted with someone else''s home - and what a beautiful home! All of my dealings with Carolyn have been friendly, positive and helpful and this made it so easy to relax for the weekend. The quality of accommodation when you''re spending your hard earned cash is obviously important; how you are treated by the host is where the true value lies and me and my lovely pals felt like valued and welcome guests. I have stayed previously, wouldn''t hesitate to stay again and highly recommend this host. Oh and the beds, I nearly forgot the beds - they are blissfully comfortable
Review from Declan after 10 day stay in Aug 2023
By Declan on 01-Sep-2023This is a beautiful property, a fantastic characterful building (with fascinating history) set in a great rural location. Nature reserve next door, very peaceful, easy walks and river just out the door. Perfect for nature lovers and those wanting to get away from it all (but not too far away!). The hosts were excellent, super helpful with info on the local area and how everything in the house worked. Very large sociable kitchen/dining area. Highly recommended.
