Description

This unique property offers you the opportunity to stay in a traditional Norfolk Windmill in a Broadland riverside location.
Sleeps up to 4 in two bedrooms.

Martham Mill was built in 1908 by well respected and admired Millwright, Dan England. Martham Mill, also known as Bracys Mill has stood proudly overlooking the River Thurne and Hickling Broad for over a century. The Windmill has been sensitively renovated in order not to detract from its original purpose but still has all the modern facilities you require to enjoy your holiday.
The Mill stands by itself in an enclosed garden surrounded by idyllic Broadland Marshes and can be reached by boat or a 10 minute walk along a concrete path from your individual car parking space. A trolley is provided at the parking space to help transport your luggage.

Just stepping across the River Path onto the privately owned Mill Moorings you have your own seating area where you can picnic, fish, birdwatch and imagine Nelson as a young man learning to sail on Hickling Broad. Sit quietly here and watch the life on the River Thurne and adjacent Hickling Norfolk Wildlife Trust or just relax and do nothing.
On these moorings is Grebe, a day boat for you to use at your leisure. The use of this boat is included in the price of your stay with a tank of fuel, life jackets, insurance and full instruction included. This really is the best way to explore The Norfolk Broads.

Around the mill within the enclosed garden are lovely areas to sit with seating provided to enjoy the most splendid evening views across uninterrupted countryside. Sit quietly and you may see Barn Owls and Marsh Harriers and can listen to the Bittern boom.

The Mill sleeps up to 4. As you enter on the ground floor you will find an open plan living area with comfy seating, a round table for dining, which has been fashioned around the main wooden Mill Shaft with Cog Wheel! Television, fitted kitchen complete with dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave.
From the hall you can access the bathroom and an external door which leads to your secluded seating area.

There are 2 upward steps to enter the Mill and 2 downward steps to go into the ground floor extension where the bathroom is located. Taking the 2 steps down will take you to the ground floor extension, here you will find your bathroom complete with shower. In this extension are viewing windows of adjacent woodland where you can sit and watch the small songbirds.

On the first floor, which is accessed via a hand made ‘standard style’ wooden staircase you will find the double bedroom, complete with double bed, wardrobe, drawers but most importantly the most splendid Broadland views. The second floor bedroom is accessed via a ladder and not a standard set of stairs. This room has two single 2’6’’ beds. To access this guests must be agile and possibly just a little adventurous! Please note that you will have to pass through the first floor bedroom to get to the second floor bedroom.

Bed linen, towels, tea towels and household items are provided and beds are made for your arrival. Electric heating is included.

Dogs welcome at no charge so you can bring your doggy family member/s on holiday at no extra cost and enjoy long walks without even getting into your car. Martham village has food stores, a chemist, post office, fish and chips, takeaway, butchers and public houses. The local village of Potter Heigham offers a dog friendly pub and cafe, large store selling food and loads more and a huge fishing tackle shop. You can get to Potter Heigham by river.

You can access the beach at Horsey by taking Grebe across Horsey Broad and then walking 2.5 miles to the dog friendly beach. At Horsey you will find another windmill recently renovated but you can’t stay in this one! Cafes and toilets are here too, so well worth a days visit.

Friday arrival from May to November. Closed in winter.
Please note - this property is not suitable for those with mobility issues or young children.
This is STRICTLY a no smoking property.

The owner is happy to discuss a holiday in this unique piece of Norfolk history, you will be made very welcome and will never forget your holiday in a Norfolk Windmill.

A Poem Written by a Mill Guest

By Joe, Naomi and Ben on 21-Jul-2023

Let''s go away from our working ordeals, Get on a boat and see just how it feels, Or follow the map, To Horsey Gap, And see a beach that is covered in seals. The Mill was designed to pump water, From where it shouldn''t be to where it oughter, There now are no sails, So, as a pump, it fails, But, as a guesthouse, it''s hard to fault-er! - Joe, Naomi and Ben, 21 July 2023
