Lymington is a world-renowned centre for sailing and is a great base for exploring the wonderful New Forest National Park. The town itself is Georgian, every building is different and there are alleyways and nooks and crannies to wander through at your leisure. There is an amazingly diverse mix of cafe's, shops and restaurants which cater for tastes from traditional fish and chips or a pasty on the quay to Michelin starred restaurants for that special treat. Lymington is home to many holiday cottages so you will never be short of somewhere special to stay.
The Forest was first mentioned in the Domesday Book and still offers over 200 square miles of mixed woodland, farmland and open Heath to explore. May and June are the best times to see the new foals on the forest, and late June/July is when the fawns appear with their mothers. Bolderwood, in the heart of the forest is a good place to deer spot! There are miles of footpaths and cycle tracks (bike hire is available from all of the local villages) with an excellent mapping service on the New Forest website. Lyndhurst has the New Forest Visitor Centre and Museum and can help with marked walks etc.
For a great day out, walk down to the town station and get the train to the Isle of Wight ferry, cross the Solent and spend the day exploring the Isle of Wight, then return the same way. Relaxing for the grown-ups, exciting for the kids!
To the south of the Forest is Beaulieu with the National Motor Museum, F1 collection and Abbey, and for the youngsters there is Peppa Pig world and Paultons theme park to the northern edge. Both are within an hours drive, or why not take the bus from the High Street.
There are also buses to Southampton or Bournemouth from the high street, and an open-topped hop-on, hop-off bus which tours the forest and visits all the traditional villages while giving you a day off from driving and an excellent vantage point to see the spectacular views.
There is never a dull day here!
