Wow, what a beautiful home. We are very privileged to have stayed in such a luxury location. No detail was spared, the theme of family and love ran through every room, even down to the smallest touches. There was not a speck of dust to be found on any surface. The cottage was immaculate. Attention to detail and a cup of tea ready to go on arrival was very welcome after a 9.5hr drive. We took our elderly family pet with us, and they found a sunny spot in front of the french doors to snooze the days away, they were able to paws and relax, watching the wildlife and enjoying the silence and the peace. The view is incredible, we had a couple of clear nights and you can see the milky way, the sky is mesmerising with stars. There were deer to be seen in the garden nibbling on fresh spring leaves, and a family of crows that played on the lawn, we fed them a couple of left over chips and they were thrilled. The cottage is a 15-20 minute stroll into Helmsdale, or a 2 minute drive, the takeaway/restaurant serves beautiful fish and chips, the shop opposite has everything you need on a day by day basis to cook, relax and nibble on treats in the evening. We drove through the mountain pass from Helmsdale to Thurso, it took us about 2-3 hours as we kept having to stop for the amazing views, and wildlife. We saw golden eagles, osprey, red kites, lapwings, oyster catchers, merlin, sheep, lambs, coos (highland cows) and so much more. We visited Old Pulteney distillery in Wick, 8 Doors in John O'Groats, Wolfburn in Thurso, and North Point just outside Thurso, we were made so very welcome despite being out of season, we were given so much time and additional information to help us choose, each distillery recommended another, a true community spirit. Tain has an Asda and Lidl which are easy to get to, Wick has a Tesco. Tain is home to the Glenmorangie distillery as well as a lesser known "Lost distillery" called Balblair. Tain also has a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses just off the A9 at Meikle Ferry, it was recently refurbished to a very high standard by a team of unpaid volunteers from around the UK, we were made to feel very welcome when we popped in to take a look, they are open for free bible based Christian worship meetings on Sundays at 10:30am and Wednesdays at 7pm. Frank gave us a wealth of information about a week before arriving for our stay, from places to go, to attractions, walks, scenic routes and more. Kathy messaged once we had arrived to check all was well. Sandy the gardener popped up to mow the law and verges along the driveway and we had a lovely chat about the area. We also visited the region my great grandparents and my grandmother were from, Dingwall, the Storehouse restaurant and gift shop is an absolute must, the food is incredible and reasonably priced and alllllll the locals know it. While you are there head back up to Balintore to see the Mermaid of the North, she sits upon a rock named "Clach Dubh" (black rock in Gaelic) and is visible whether the tide is in or out. If you make it to John O'Groats then the signpost is free to visit, the first and last gift shop is full to bursting, and Café Groats is the best food (crab was divine...) with floor to ceiling glass overlooking Stroma island which is now uninhabited. And if you are exhausted just reading this then it's time to book because on the one day we stayed in we spent it watercolour painting overlooking THAT view, which we also stared at every evening until it was too dark to see, and then we waited for the stars. Highly recommend. We would love to return.
Spotlessly clean and in a great location for Sutherland and Caithness. Near great beaches and dog walks, missing it already!
Lovely view. Very well presented spotlessly clean cottage. Communication with the owner excellent. We would love to return in the future.
I highly recommend Sunrise as a place to stay. The photos just don’t do it justice. It’s an unbelievable location and this large cottage is amazing.
Had a fantastic week at sunrise hope to go back next year frank&kathy we’re so helpful
Outstanding.Frank, the owner, called me a few days before our arrival to provide useful info on arrival, places to visit and places to eat etc. This was appreciated and a really nice touch. It’s clear the owners care that they provide a quality holiday experience. When we drove up the steep driveway on arrival we all said “wow” when we saw the view, helped of course by the characteristically great weather with clear blue skies. The cottage is CLEAN (spotlessly clean), comfortable and well equipped, not just with essentials such as sharp knives, clean pans etc, but many homely touches. One of Frank’s pre-arrival tips was to shine a torch outside prior to Ruby dog’s night time p-mail visits to the garden…and he was right, the nosey neighbour deer population did tend to visit the garden at exactly Ruby’s potty time! If you are reading this to decide on which cottage to book….its this one! We do lots of cottage holidays and if we return to this area …we will book Sunrise.
