Corlummin is 2.5 km west of picturesque Foxford in North Mayo. The River Moy, one of the most popular salmon fishing rivers in the world, runs through the town. On the river bank is Foxford Woollen Mills established in 1892 by Sister Agnes Morrogh-Bernard. The award winning store and visitor centre is recognised as one of the best in Ireland. It includes a café serving delicious food, art galleries and offers a guided tour which tells the fascinating story of the working Wollen Mills from the 19th to the 21st century. Admiral Brown, who played a pivotal role in the formation of the Argentinian Navy, hails from Foxford and is celebrated in the town. Michael Davitt, one of the most important figures in Irish history, was born in nearby Straide in 1846. The Michael Davitt Museum is located in the restored village church.
Major Mayo towns Ballina and Castlebar are both only 16km away, and the beautiful heritage town of Westport, 46km. Ireland West International Airport at Knock is a 30 min drive.
Foxford nestles between the Ox and Nephin mountains. There are several loop walks in the area varying in distance and difficulty. At 804m Nephin is Ireland’s tallest standalone mountain.
A mile from Mamies Lough Cullin has three small sandy beaches with parking adjacent to Drummin Wood, great for swimming and gentle kayaking.
Further afield there are beautiful coastal beaches at Enniscrone, Belmullet, Mulranny, and Achill where all manner of water sports including surfing can be enjoyed. Achill Island is characterised by rugged mountains and peat bogs and has impressive sea cliffs and clean beaches with views to towards Clare Island to the south, and Blacksod Bay and the Mullet Peninsula to the north.
To the north, Downpatrick Head is located on the Céide coast where the views are breathtaking. The world’s oldest know field systems can be seen at the Céide Fields Visitor centre.
Croagh Patrick, Clare Island, and Connemara are also easily accessible.
There’s a fantastic range of cycling options many of which take you past beautiful scenery. The Greenway- a dedicated 49km cycling route-follows the Wild Atlantic way from Westport to Achill Sound and is particularly enjoyable.
There are 18 hole golf courses at Ballina, Enniscrone, Castlebar, Westport and Claremorris and 9 hole courses at Swinford, Mulranny, Achill Island, and Ballyhaunis. Regular horse racing meetings are held at Ballinrobe (50km).
