Description

Luxury gite sleeping up to 10, with heated swimming pool in enclosed pretty garden. Within a short walk of both village and woods. Rated 4-star by Anjou Tourisme.

Welcome to this characterful detached stone-built house, sleeping up to 10 people. It has two sitting rooms, so is ideal for family groups.

Enjoy the heated outdoor swimming pool in the large enclosed mature garden, and the South-facing enclosed patio, perfect for eating outside.

Stay a stone’s throw from the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud , with marvellous views of it from most of the bedrooms and the grounds.

Fontevraud's classic French square is just 300 metres away, with a bakery, three restaurants and two bars, as well as the stunning Abbey …

… and yet the house and garden are tranquil and on the edge of the woods with walks and cycle rides starting from the end of the drive.

The downstairs living and dining area is light and open area with exposed oak beams and the region’s typical tuffeau stone, and large south-facing windows overlooking the garden. At one end a large dining table by the traditional stone fireplace seats 10, and is adjoined by a comfortable seating area to relax; while at the other end there is a large leather sofa and additional seating together with a large television (and DVD player).

A second lounge area is found upstairs with two sofas, a piano, a ‘smart’ TV, books to tempt and large French windows facing east which catch the morning sun.

The house’s rustic style and oak beams continue into the fully equipped kitchen. Outside the kitchen is a sun-trap terrace with electrically operated sun shade for the hotter days and an outside dining table seating 10 people.

Upstairs there are four large en-suite bedrooms: three overlooking the garden and Abbey, one with windows facing north.

There is also one large en-suite bedroom downstairs, with a view across the garden from its south-facing windows.

All of the en-suites have a shower, toilet and washbasin; the one downstairs also has a full-size deep ‘peninsula’ bath.

The downstairs bedroom, and three of the four upstairs, can be arranged with a king-size bed or two single beds. The master bedroom upstairs has a king-size bed.

The garden is fully secure and occupies the south side of the property, with a 10 by 3.5 metre heated swimming pool at one end, two swings at the other, and enough space in between for boules - or for the whole family to relax in the sun. There’s also a full-size outdoor table tennis table and barbecue available to use.

At one end of the house there is a separate courtyard garden where a bed of different mint varieties can be picked for fresh mint tea.

Fontevraud’s picturesque village square is less than 300 metres away, complete with elegant town hall and fountain, and overlooked by the ancient parish church. The square is served by 2 bars, 3 restaurants and a tea room, together with a classic bakery and a mini-supermarket.

The entrance to the Royal Abbey is on the square. Find our house on the wooden model in the rear cloisters!

A wonderful place for a family holiday.

By Jill Lowrey on 24-Oct-2024

This property is perfect for a family holiday as there is plenty for people of all ages to enjoy, including the heated pool, table tennis, a piano and two separate sitting areas with tvs. Everything was spotlessly clean, well equipped and comfortable. The wifi is great! The village is beautiful and has a bakery, small store and a pharmacy. There are many places to visit in the area. Ian was very helpful and made some excellent recommendations.

Thank you for this lovely review. We are delighted that you enjoyed all the different aspects of the house and our wonderful area. We hope you will come again; there's plenty more chateaux, walks, restaurants and vineyards that we can recommend in our region!

Two weeks at the gite

By Steve on 03-Aug-2024

We had a fabulous time. The gite was everything we could hope for and more. Comfortable beds and all en-suite, very luxurious. We were lucky enough with the weather to spend most of the time in the brilliant garden. Fully self contained with lots of space, great patio and a pool! Local amenities are great - restaurants, bars, baker and a shop for necessities within a 5 minute walk. The area is lovely - lots to see and do. Pretty much a perfect holiday. We loved it.

Great place to stay

By Catherine on 20-Jul-2024

This is a beautiful home in the most attractive setting. The communication from the owners was fantastic, they provided really helpful information on the area and places of interest. The accommodation itself is fantastic, we were a large family with a baby and the house provided for all our needs. Gorgeous garden and pool and well equipped house. An unforgettable week for all the right reasons

Very nice gite

By John Williams on 22-Jun-2024

This is a very nice gite with a secluded garden and modern heated pool in a good location, close to the centre of the lively village of Fontevraud l'Abbaye with several restaurants, a shop and a boulangerie plus the impressive abbey. The house is simply but well furnished and all the en-suite bathrooms are to a very high standard. The gite is very close to open countryside, footpaths and good walking. We hope to return.

The perfect place for a family holida

By Anna Hannay on 29-Mar-2024

We recently spent a week at the beautiful Au pied de l'Abbaye - as a family group of nine the house gave us all the space we needed and more! The hosts have really thought about what might be needed on holiday and provided everything needed to make our stay comfortable and easy. Right from the beginning Ian was super helpful and communication was easy - with lots of hints and advice to make the most of our stay. The house itself is in the perfect location - a short walk to the village centre and short drive to nearest towns and attractions. It was honestly the best holiday we have had together and we were all very sad to leave - we hope to return to Au pied de l'Abbaye soon! Thank you Ian and Tracey!

Thank you so much for this generous review. We are just delighted that you all enjoyed your holiday and that our gite was part of that. We have set it up to work well for family groups, and we are always pleased when we hear that it has. It is a privilege to have it used for family gatherings at special times like Easter and Christmas. We hope we will see you and your family again soon, Anna, maybe to enjoy the delights that our lovely region has to offer at different times of the year.

An excellent location for exploring the region.

Nine of us, all adults, recently spent a very enjoyable week 'Au pied de l'Abbaye' this September. The house has ample space, is comfortable and well appointed. The enclosed garden, terrace and pool surround provide plenty of opportunities for relaxation and there is space to park several cars. The centre of Fontevraud, the abbey and art museum is less than 10 minutes away by foot and offers a range of very good restaurants and a boulangerie. A host of interesting towns, villages, chateaux etc are within easy reach by car and comprehensive guidance on all of this as well as shopping, medical, recycling and emergency information is provided by the hosts.
