Description

Bridge View is a characterful old stone house in the centre of the picturesque village of Gunnerside, Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Close by flows the bubbling beck passing under the bridge to join the river Swale. The old house has been adapted over hundreds of years being stables, shop and home to local folk. Some of the interior quirky nooks and crannies and uneven stone walls remain from long ago. The large windows provide good light and views of the village and surrounding hills. From the front door you can access miles of valley, riverside and moorland walks, bicycle routes in all directions without needing to use your car.

Bridge View is ideally situated for walkers, hikers, cyclists, mountain bikers, birdwatchers, photographers and families who want to explore the beautiful Dales countryside and for those interested in the lead mining and farming heritage. The Pennine Way, Coast to Coast route and the Swale Trail are nearby. Many of the moorland paths are traditional miner's routes to work and lead past now abandoned lead mine workings. Higher above the village it is barren, rugged and wild with peat moorland where the hardy Swaledale sheep roam. In contrast the gentle valley and riverside are host to lush pastures. Everywhere you experience the rich heritage of agricultural and mining settlements with the field barns, Churches, Chapels, pubs, village halls, Literary institutes etc .

Cozy cottage in the heart of Gunnerside

By Tracey Drury on 30-Mar-2024

We are a family of four (17 year old and a 20 year old children) and we loved our stay at Bridge View. Despite growing up in Richmond, I’ve never really explored Swaledale before this holiday. It’s such a beautiful, rugged, genuine dale with plenty of stunning walks, many from the cottage itself. It’s an absolute bonus to have a cracking pub 73 steps from the front door! The King’s Head does traditional pub grub done extremely well, the steak and ale pie being the star of the show. The Swale Trail Pale Ale is exceptional. Further afield, Hawes is within easy reach for provisions and numerous small villages nearby to walk to, Muker being a particular favourite of ours. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable with ample space and flexible sleeping options. The beds are very comfortable and the log burner adds to the cozy atmosphere. The treats on arrival were very much appreciated, thank you! We would definitely recommend Bridge View for a relaxing break in the best of the Yorkshire Dales (in my unbiased opinion!)

Perfectly placed spot in Sealedale

Lovely accommodation that is perfectly placed to enjoy all the best of Swaledale

Stunning

By Nicola Devaney on 20-Nov-2023

We had a fabulous stay at Bridge view. The cottage was cosy and every detail had been thought of. Jeremy and Jan were super helpful and left a lovely welcome pack full of homemade goodies. A generous touch. The area is simply stunning. We were lucky with the weather. You really do not need to leave the village as so many walks begin from there. Pub opposite what more do you need? We will definitely return. Thanks J and J x
