Description

Headborough Farm and its outbuildings began in late medieval times and have been modified and extended throughout their long history. The largest building is the tithe barn where crops (effectively a local 10% tax on tenant farmers) were secured. The barn was neglected in the 20th century and suffered some severe structural damage, culminating in a fire in the 1980's which damaged the roof and upper walls.

The last owners obtained listed building consent to restore the entire building from its state of total ruin, with about half to be used as a holiday home. After two and a half years' work involving numerous local skilled artisans, the end result has satisfied the needs for conservation whilst providing a unique and comfortable house. Many of the materials used were either recycled or locally sourced. The thatch is under-lined with sheep's wool and the new walls are highly insulated and up to 900 mm thick! For extra comfort, the windows are either triple or double glazed. It is a very comfortable and low energy dwelling.

Inside, the fittings and fixtures are modern and functional. The furniture (beds, sofas and curtains) has been chosen to provide the comfort of typical 4-5 star hotel, whilst fitting in with the country rustic style of the oak beams and planked doors. All technical parts are modern and efficient; the under-floor heating system, the cooking equipment, the laundry, and the TV system included.

The Tithe Barn has its own private outside spaces including a patio and barbecue / recreation area. The remaining part of the barn is a spacious galleried games room with table tennis table, a large 7 ft pool / snooker table and a quality cross trainer. Here you will see the full beauty of a traditional oak framed roof and the underside of the thatch.

Location, Location, Location!!

We have just returned home from a fantastic week in Stuart and Jane’ beautiful cottage. We took our youngest three children and the barn was equipped for their every need. They were especially impressed with the games room and the large field to play in. However, it was Stuart and Jane’ two friendly labradors that they loved the most . The cottage is set in an idyllic peaceful location but only a stones throw from Ashburton. We were never short of things to do or places to visit and could easily have filled a second week. Will definitely visit again and would recommend the cottage to anyone.

Exceptional, spacious top end conversion

Close to the quaint town of Ashurton and of course rugged Dartmoor - great for exploring, The Tithe Barn certainly deserves the 5* Gold Award rating. We've stayed in many high end self catering properties, all of which have been excellent but this was exceptional Our hosts Jane and Stuart were so welcoming, the rooms were large, airy and light and so well equipped with everything we might possibly need.

Perfect 5 star family break in breathtaking Dartmoor

By Matt Cullimore on 07-Sep-2019

We first stayed at this property a couple of years ago and were so impressed that we wanted to return to it - something we rarely do as we like to try new places, however the Tithe Barn is absolutely perfect for what we need. The property has been renovated to the highest standard and the quality of the building, fixtures and fittings is reflected throughout. We have three children (12,10,10) and the blend of outdoor space (there is a dedicated large mown field for you to use for ball games or in our case flying a drone!) and indoor facilities is first class. There is a games room that has a pool table and a full size table tennis table which kept all amused for many hours - there is even a cross trainer in there for the more energetic! The owners are very friendly and accommodating and made us again feel so welcome - their beautiful friendly black labradors were also a massive hit with our children who loved them as much as our own dog! The location of the property is just outside Ashburton which is ideal if you want to nip into town for supplies etc as well as cafes and restaurants. The big attraction to us is it is only minutes away from the heart of Dartmoor. We did walking, wild river swimming (cold!) and ate out at a couple of excellent and remote pubs. Other amenities are also really close so for the younger children the steam railway is 10 minutes away and we also found a great climbing wall in Buckfastleigh for the one rainy day we experienced. There are superb beaches about 40 mins away as well as a great place to go crabbing (Stoke Gabriel) and Paignton Zoo is within striking distance, which is a good day out. We travelled a bit further afield to the likes of Lydford Gorge (National Trust) and Coleton Fishacre (National Trust) as well as a visit to the museum at HMP Dartmoor (good for a curious couple of hours). Plenty to do, especially if you are outdoors orientated but lots even if you are not. The property is a quiet and secluded haven where you immediately feel relaxed and can listen to the buzzards (day) and owls (night) from the private patio area. We will definitely be returning and thank Stuart and Jane for their hospitality.
